1st time to the group have not seen a FAQ sorry.
I want to get/install a copy of linux that I can use on my Win95 machine,
enabling me to learn Unix navigation.
I downloaded a copy of what I thought to be a copy of Linux, it is linux-lp
44 ?
What is this please and how do I go about installing it when I do get it.
Thanks in advance.
Jay

Sorry, but you can't do that. Linux is an operating system. It won't
run "under" Windows 95; Windows 95 is not powerful enough to do that.
You can install it on the *same machine*, but you can only run one or
the other at any given time (you would need to reboot to switch).

I'm not sure what you want to do. Anyway, if you want to just learn
something about Linux or Unix in general, see below.

I have no idea what that file might be, sorry.

You may want to start with http://www.linux.org/info/index.html.

Hi Jay:

I have a document called 'newuser.txt' that will walk you through the
download and installation of a medium sized Slackware 3.4 (kernel v
2.0.30) but powerful Linux OS. The document is an unformatted DOS text
file of about 10 kB compressed. Just drop it into your favorite word
processor and format for printing - 15 pages with lots of whits space.

Included in the recommended download is a 250 page book by Matt Welsh
(noted & published Linux Guru) which will introduce you to the wonders
of Linux/unix-like operating systems - ALL FOR FREE!!!

The installation will fit on 100mB of hard disk space and you should
be able to connect to your ISP for internet access and perhaps
downloading even more free Linux applications like C/C++ compilers,
Perl, awk, sed, X-windows, emacs (provided you have the space).

Just e-mail me and ask (I won't send out unsolicited SPAM) and I will
send 'newuser.txt' promptly - and it is free too.

Regards,

Brian.
