Subject: Recording of hearing: volunteer needed

Good news: the court tells me I can pick up a digital audio
recording tomorrow morning, so we needn't rely upon my
possibly muddled recollections of the hearing much longer.

Bad news: it's in a blecherous proprietary format, and I
don't have everything I need with me to convert it to
something reasonable. (As obnoxious as this is, don't get
*too* indignant about it: they can also give you a standard
analog cassette tape, so it's not like they're absolutely
requiring you to use this crap as the only way to obtain the
public records. Unfortunately, my last-minute planning was
poor enough that under either option, I don't have the
necessary equipment to promulgate the recording to the
world.)

Your mission, should you choose to accept it:

1) To test your ability to help, download from
sco.petrofsky.org/test-wavs the recording of an unrelated
May 24 hearing before Judge Jones. It's 12 Megabytes in 7
.wav files.

2) Grab the necessary Windows software from
fortherecord.com, and agree to the ridiculous EULA.

3) Connect an analog audio cable from the line-out of a
Windows box to the line-in of a Linux box.

4) Use the fortherecord software to play the recording on
the Windows box, and make ogg and mp3 files on the Linux
box. This is not a violation of the EULA: you're not
reverse-engineering anything or circumventing anything,
you're just using the software to play the audio, and making
a recording of something with no copyright protection. (I'm
not your lawyer: read the EULA yourself, of course.)

5) Let me know that you succeeded and can do this again
tomorrow around 09:30 -0700.

If you can actually manage to capture the output of the
fortherecord Windows program after the data has undergone
the proprietary decompression, but just before it gets to
the hardware and suffers the digital-to-analog-to-digital
degredation cycle, then that would be ideal, but I'm not
expecting that we'll pull that off.

I'm downloading right now. I'll see what I can do. Got a Windows XP box with a SB Audigy, and a SuSE 9.1 box with a SB 128, so I'll just got a-hunting a cable or two.... ;-)

P.S. The Fortherecord format is quadraphonic (groovy, man), but don't worry about that. Just try to get something, mono or stereo, that includes everything in the mix.

Not really quadrophonic - it's just got 4 sound channels that can be toggled on or off in the player. It's 64kpbs, 16bit.

Just had a bit of a play around. I can actually record the playback with Creative Recorder on the same machine! Dead easy!

Now, what format would you like it in? ;-)

Oh, and they also store the date, time and courtroom in the files!

Reminds me of IFF on the Amiga - you could store sound, video, text, midi, pictures, copyright messages, etc all in one file! You just had to parse the bits you needed.

Nah. How about SID?

Or APE? Actually, I think that would be slight overkill.... ;-)

Just found on the ForTheRecord website that there is a Save-To-Format add-in to their player that should save to a suitable format to record to a CD. Going to have to do a reboot, though, 'cos when I declined their offer of rebooting after installing, and then tried to use the Save-To-Format, it promptly decided to use up nearly 2Gb of pagefile, and crashed! God, I hate Windows!

Thanks for noticing that. I can't get it to work, even with
a reboot, on this Windows 2000 laptop. Does anyone have it
working?

Tried uninstalling, rebooting, reinstalling, rebooting, and it still crashes after filling 2Gb of virtual memory and 640Mb of physical memory! I tried saving as CD Audio and as WMA - same thing.

Plays OK, so I can go with the recording via Creative Recorder. At least this records within the soundcard.

Now, as I asked earlier, what format do you want?

Sounds good. Will you be available in the 09:00 to 11:00
(PDT, -0700) timeframe tomorrow?

> Now, as I asked earlier, what format do you want?

I'm not too up on these things, but my understanding was
that ogg is the most widespread completely open format, and
that mp3 is a much more widespread format that has some
patent issues but is easily used by almost all Windows and
non-Windows users. Thus, I was thinking of providing those
two formats.

If you succeed on this test hearing, please email the ogg
and mp3 to me (or email (or post here) links to the files
somewhere on the web).

I've got bugger all else to do! Been off work due to ME/CFS for over a year now. It's mainly my mobility that is affected, so sitting at this screen aint too much of a hardship!

If you need to email me, just use the cambo67 AT yahoo DOT co DOT uk address. I'll have Y! Messenger running too.

I'm doing a fresh recording right now. I'll email you the files once fininshed.

I still haven't heard from anyone who managed to convert the
sample hearing to ogg or mp3. Cambo67? Anyone?

Thanks to the people who pointed out that fortherecord's
software does allow you to export to a non-proprietary
format if you get their save-to-format plug-in.
Unfortunately, I haven't heard from anyone who has gotten
this to work, either.

I can trivially re-record the files by:

1. installing the stupid player.
2. Select "What-U-Hear" as the recording source (standard with Creative SBLive cards)
3. Play the file in the stupid player.
4. Record with a suitable software.

I tried it. It worked.

Of course, it takes forever (1x real time).

Could you email me <al@petrofsky.org> or send/post a link to the resulting ogg and mp3 files of that test hearing?

I'm trying to do a complete proof-of-concept here, all the way to making the converted files available, and then getting reports that people can access them.

Done. Note that I only did the last segment of that hearing. I'm assuming the recordings are mono so so is my re-encode. Level might be a little high. Encoded at quality 2 -- might get away with less.

I didn't receive the email. Did it bounce back to you? Perhaps it's failing because of large size. Could you send me a short email with a temporary link to the files somewhere?

Subject: AutoZone recording somewhat available

The recording of yesterday's hearing is available at:

sco.petrofsky.org/ftr-2004-07-12

To listen to it, copy the seven wav files there (14 MB) to a
directory on a Windows box, get the player software from
fortherecord.com, agree to the fscking EULA, start the
player, and open the directory (the player will
transparently combine the files for you).

I hope to have more reasonable mp3 and ogg versions
available soon, but I may need to check out and hit the road
even sooner. If I disappear, other folks please take the
lead in getting this converted and posted at a site that can
handle a minor slashdotting. And then, of course, start
typing ...

Can someone drop me an email (cambo67 AT yahoo DOT co DOT uk) with a suitable FTP site?

Just for the record, I gave up. I tried _three times_ and every time that crap application froze the whole fucking system.

The closest I came was 7 min from the end.

No, I'm not going to waste any more on my time on this. "FTR Player Plus" illustrates most of what is wrong with crap proprietary software.

It was worse than that! It confused the hell out of Windows!

There's a _feature_ of the Save-To-File add-in to FTR Gold that insists on checking that you are using a unique filename. If your partition is under about 5Gb, it takes a while, but you should be OK.

Now, I've got two 120Gb drives, and an 80Gb drive (one of the 120Gb drives if half given over to SuSE). I've also got 640Mb of DDR RAM. After filling 2Gb of pagefile, FTR crashed, and also crashed explorer!!!!

So, how did I manage to do it? Well, I've got a SB Audigy, so I used Creative Recorder to record the playback from FTR. Worked a treat. Just had to make sure to turn off all windows sounds, etc!

Oh well, at least it's done now. Go have a listen.

Maybe we could transcribe the hearing together?
I started with the 19th minute (that is between 17:59 and 19:01, think ot the 19th century if it confuses you) and will add it in a separate posting to this tread.
